📖 Grown-up’s preparation guide

A printable plan for turning the competition list into manageable practice.

1. Confirm the right word list

These are sample words, not an official syllabus. Ask the school or organizer which list and rules apply. If the competition is Scripps, begin with official Words of the Champions resources and check its current rules. Local bees may use different materials.

2. Sort words into four gardens
  • New seeds: not studied yet.
  • Growing: needs a clue or another try.
  • Blooming: spelled correctly more than once.
  • Tricky patch: missed words to revisit later.

Group words by roots, prefixes, suffixes, origin, or spelling pattern. Keep the official list’s order or levels visible.

3. Make each word memorable

Say it, explain its meaning, use it in a sentence, spot a useful pattern or verified origin clue, then spell it aloud and write it from memory. Notice the tricky letters together.

4. Review little and often

Use short sessions: familiar words, a small set of new words, then a game. Revisit uncertain words the next day, a few days later, and the following week. Treat mistakes as clues, not failures.

5. Learn from champions’ methods

Champion and coach interviews describe studying word patterns and etymology, organizing word sets, reviewing errors, and practising a calm question routine. Use these as study ideas, not predictions of future words. See a champion preparation interview.

6. Practise the stage routine

In a friendly mock bee, listen closely, breathe, repeat the word, and ask for a definition or other help only if the competition rules allow it. Celebrate curiosity, effort, and persistence.

Competition-ready tip: replace the sample game words with the organizer’s approved list. This is an independent practice template, not an official Scripps product.
